In The Beginning
Men referred to women as inferior. They were considered a source of temptation and evil. For example St. Jerome , a father of a christian church, said "women is the gates of the devil". The main role of a female was that of maternal mother and house keeper. Back then men were able to own their wives and children. There was ,however an equality law in England that gave women job that restricted them. There were some jobs that only allowed them to work eight hours a day. Others didn't allow them to lift over fifteen pounds. Later there were acts that were passed such as Equal Pay Act in 1963, Civil rights act in 1964 and American women right to vote in 1920. The struggle towards equality began by Franny wrights books in the 1820.
Partners
Elizabeth C. Stanton wrote an autobiography, 80 Years and More, and Women's Bible, criticizing a woman's role in the old testament. Meeting her partner in 1851, Susan B. Anthony, they became some of the founding mothers of women rights. They began there life long partnership with Stanton who was a master of words and Anthony who was able to see and feel but was unable to express which formed a perfect partnership. Together they created the National Women's Suffrage Association (NWSA). The pair also started the first convention that concerning women rights in Seneca Falls
Seneca Falls
In the Seneca falls convention, they introduced the Declaration of Rights Sentiments in 1848, which supported life , liberty and the pursuit of happiness. he Sentiment addressed the right to vote, higher education, being able to live a professional life, the power to own property, and being able to obtain a divorce. There was a unanimous vote including Fredrick Douglas . There were 100 voters with the votes of females:68 and males:32.
Approval
Congress later approved the 19 amendment. They were concerned about making it a federal or an individual act. Stanton wanted the NWSA to be under a federal act. She also presented the act of solitude in 1892 to the U.S congressman committee.
